LAS VEGAS, Nev. (702 Times, NV Globe) – A previously unidentified hiker was discovered dead Thursday at Red Rock Recreation Area.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department launched a rescue effort on January 26 at around 8 a.m. Earlier the morning, I noticed a helicopter in the vicinity. The search was called off just before 5 p.m., according to LVMPD.
Luke Saunders, 22, was discovered dead at Red Rock, according to the Clark County Coroner’s Office. His cause of death and manner of death were still unknown as of Friday.
Saunders was last spotted hiking in Red Rock Canyon on January 24. Both Red Rock Search & Rescue and the LVMPD have said that they are looking for Saunders.
Lt. Col. Bryon McGarry, a spokeswoman for Nellis Air Force Facility, confirmed Saunders’ assignment to the base on Thursday. On Friday, a request for more information was not immediately replied.
A camper in the nearby said search and rescue officials told them the hiker had fallen.
