In a decisive move to enhance animal welfare protections, Nevada’s Legislature has passed Assembly Bill 381, known as “Reba’s Law,” which aims to impose stricter penalties on acts of animal cruelty. The bill, named after an English bulldog who died after being left in a plastic bin during a Las Vegas heatwave, seeks to elevate certain animal cruelty offenses from a Category D to a Category C felony, potentially increasing prison sentences from up to four years to a range of one to five years .
The legislation faced initial hurdles, including a temporary stall in the Assembly Judiciary Committee. However, significant public outcry and advocacy led to its revival and eventual passage . Advocates have expressed gratitude to Assemblywoman Melissa Hardy for her leadership in advancing the bill.
The bill now awaits the signature of Governor Joe Lombardo to become law. If enacted, it would represent a significant step in strengthening Nevada’s stance against animal cruelty.
