Shelter Pleads for Responsibility as Pet Dumping Incidents Surge in Las Vegas

In a disheartening display of disregard for animal welfare, surveillance footage from the Nevada SPCA reveals two individuals abandoning an English bulldog in a crate at the shelter’s entrance after hours. The dog remained unattended for nearly four hours before a passerby took it, and its current whereabouts are unknown.

This incident is not isolated. According to Ebone Smith, Associate Director at the Nevada SPCA, the shelter has witnessed nearly 15 animals dumped either in or near their parking lot this year alone.

Abandoning animals is not only illegal but also poses significant risks to the animals’ well-being, especially in extreme weather conditions. On the day of the incident, Las Vegas recorded its first 100-degree day of the year, exacerbating the dangers for any animal left without shelter or care.

There are established, humane procedures for those unable to care for their pets. The Nevada SPCA offers resources and assistance for pet owners in need. Smith emphasizes, “If you need food or medical assistance, there are resources. You just need to pick up the phone or stop into the NSPCA, and we’d be more than happy to help you.”

It’s imperative for the community to recognize the importance of responsible pet ownership and to utilize available resources rather than resorting to abandonment.
