GOLDFIELD, NEVADA – Last week, a truly shocking incident took place on U.S. 95 in Goldfield, resulting in the tragic loss of Derek Cornell’s life. Derek, who worked as a tow truck driver and also dedicated his time as a volunteer firefighter, was involved in a fatal shooting, as confirmed by the Nye County Sheriff’s Office.
The sequence of events unfolded when an unidentified individual rear-ended Derek’s truck. After pulling over, a confrontation took place, escalating to the point where the suspect armed themselves with an assault rifle and began shooting at Derek.
Tragically, Derek Cornell was found deceased at the scene. Miraculously, another person, who was later identified as Derek’s son by a friend, arrived after the crash and fortunately sustained only minor injuries, managing to escape the shooting unharmed.
Nye County law enforcement promptly responded to the incident, leading to the arrest of the suspected attacker a few hours later.
A close friend of the victim, Clayton Agner, shared the devastating impact of this loss, stating, “He was a father of four, a loving husband, and a dedicated firefighter in Goldfield, in addition to being a 30-year veteran in the towing industry.”
To support Derek Cornell’s family during this difficult time, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with funeral expenses. The community is coming together to offer comfort and aid to the grieving family as they try to cope with this heart-wrenching tragedy.
