The Trump administration is making swift moves to shake up federal law enforcement, instructing senior FBI leaders—including the head of the Las Vegas office—to either resign or be fired, according to CBS News. The move is part of a broader effort to clean house at the Department of Justice, which was also directed to terminate employees involved in the prosecution of more than 1,500 defendants from the January 6 protests.
On his first night back in office, President Trump pardoned all individuals charged in connection with the Capitol demonstrations, including those convicted of assaulting police officers. Now, his administration is following up by removing officials who played a role in what many conservatives view as politically motivated prosecutions.
It remains unclear how many officials in the FBI’s Las Vegas division will be affected. However, sources indicate that Special Agent in Charge Spencer Evans, who has led the office since 2022, was among those asked to step down. The FBI has declined to comment on personnel decisions.
The shake-up follows the resignation of former FBI Director Christopher Wray, who stepped down just before Trump’s inauguration. Wray was originally appointed in 2017 but increasingly came under fire for what critics saw as the politicization of the bureau under his leadership.
Trump has nominated Kash Patel, a Las Vegas resident and longtime ally, to take over as the next FBI director. During his Senate confirmation hearings, Patel vowed to end what he called the FBI’s history of political weaponization. He also reiterated previous remarks about shutting down the FBI’s Washington, D.C., headquarters and turning it into a “museum of the deep state.”
The administration’s decisive actions signal a major shift in federal law enforcement priorities, setting the stage for a Justice Department more aligned with Trump’s commitment to draining the swamp.
