Two people were killed late Sunday night when a small aircraft departing from North Las Vegas Airport crashed near Needles Airport in California, officials confirmed. The aircraft, a Piper PA-28, went down around 9:40 p.m. on July 13.
Local authorities received reports of an unknown fire near the airport, and upon arrival, a San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy found the plane engulfed in flames. Fire crews extinguished the fire, but both individuals onboard were pronounced dead at the scene.
The aircraft was registered to a Las Vegas resident, though the county coroner’s office has not yet confirmed the identities of the victims.
Both the National Transportation Safety Board and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Aviation Unit are conducting a joint investigation into the cause of the crash.
