Update: Red Rock Canyon Fire 100% Contained, Cause Traced to Target Shooting

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has announced that the fire burning in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area since Monday is now fully contained. The blaze, known as the Bird Springs Fire, scorched 113 acres within the conservation area.
While contained, meaning the fire is no longer spreading, firefighters will remain on the scene over the next few days to establish control and extinguish any lingering embers.
“Wisps of smoke may be spotted occasionally” as crews continue their work, a BLM spokesperson advised.
The cause of the fire has been attributed to target shooting, a frequent human factor in wildfires alongside off-road vehicle use and unattended campfires.
“Public lands are meant to be enjoyed, but responsible practices are crucial to minimize human-caused fires,” emphasized Tyler Hecht, BLM Southern Nevada District Fire Management Officer. “Simple precautions can make a significant difference.”
Hecht urged target shooters to ensure they are practicing legally, avoiding the use of steel core ammunition or exploding targets. It’s important to note that target shooting is strictly prohibited within the conservation area, where the Bird Springs Fire originated.
For those using off-highway vehicles, utilizing a spark arrestor is highly recommended. Campers should consider using a camp stove instead of an open fire when cooking on public lands.
“Combating wildfires requires a collaborative effort, and we need everyone to be part of the team,” stated Hecht.
The fire ignited shortly before noon on Memorial Day near the Late Night Trailhead. While a suspect hasn’t been identified yet, the BLM is seeking information from anyone who witnessed target shooting in the area around that time.
