LAS VEGAS, NV — A routine shopping trip turned into a horrific tragedy Saturday morning after a man napping in a parked car was killed when a stranger jumped into the driver’s seat and sped away, ultimately crashing the stolen vehicle nearby.
The incident began at approximately 10:59 AM on Saturday, April 11, 2026, in the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter located at 4505 W. Charleston Blvd., near Arville Street.
A “Crime of Opportunity” Ends in Death
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), a man in his 30s was sleeping in the passenger seat of a black Hyundai Sonata while a family member was inside the store. The vehicle was reportedly running and unlocked when the suspect, identified as 55-year-old Harold Allen, entered the car and accelerated away at a high rate of speed with the passenger still inside.
“The man in the passenger seat woke up to another man essentially kidnapping him,” stated LVMPD Lt. Monique Rodriguez during a media briefing.
The high-speed flight was short-lived. Just moments after leaving the parking lot, Allen allegedly rammed the back of a silver minivan near Charleston Boulevard and Essex Drive, causing it to spin out. The stolen Hyundai then careened off the road, slamming into a large boulder and a light pole.
Suspect Faces Murder and Kidnapping Charges
The passenger was rushed to a local trauma center but was tragically pronounced dead from his injuries. The suspect and two occupants of the minivan were also hospitalized for evaluation, with Allen reportedly suffering only minor injuries.
Harold Allen, who police say has an extensive criminal history and was well-known to local law enforcement, was booked into the Clark County Detention Center. Booking logs show he faces multiple felony counts, including:
-
Open Murder
-
First-Degree Kidnapping
-
Attempted Murder
-
Grand Larceny of a Motor Vehicle
His initial court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, April 14. Police have emphasized that this appears to be a random “crime of opportunity” and that the victim and suspect did not know each other.
