LAS VEGAS, NV — The American Red Cross has declared its second-ever national blood supply crisis, warning that summer donation levels have plummeted to a four-year low while emergency room hospital demand across Southern Nevada continues to climb.

The emergency designation comes as local medical centers across Clark County face severe inventory constraints, particularly for Type O blood and platelets essential for trauma care and surgical procedures.

Summer Heat and Schedule Disruptions Drive Deficit

According to regional health officials, a combination of prolonged extreme heat across the Southwest, seasonal travel, and the temporary closure of high school and college blood drives during summer break has severely curtailed donor turnout.

Nationally, the Red Cross blood supply fell by approximately 25% over the past month alone, forcing the organization to begin limiting distributions of Type O blood products to individual hospital networks to preserve emergency capacity. Type O positive remains the most transfused blood type, while Type O negative serves as the universal red blood cell product utilized in life-threatening trauma situations.

Local First Responders Rally Valley Drives

Nearly 20 hospital networks and surgical centers across Southern Nevada rely directly on the American Red Cross for daily blood product distributions. To offset local deficits, first responder agencies—including the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Clark County Fire Department, and municipal health networks—have mobilized public blood drives across suburban community centers.

“Blood cannot be manufactured or stored indefinitely, and this sharp decline in donations has created an urgent challenge for local medical providers,” stated Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter. “We need community members to schedule donation appointments immediately so our regional trauma units and cancer centers have the supplies necessary to treat patients without delay.”
