Nevada Faces 28% Cut in Colorado River Allocations Under New Federal Plan

LAS VEGAS, NV — Nevada is expected to forfeit 84,000 acre-feet—representing roughly 28% of its total legal allocation—of Colorado River water over the next two years under an updated federal operating framework set to be released by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.

The mandatory reductions reflect an ongoing multi-state conservation agreement across the Lower Basin to stabilize water levels at Lake Mead and Lake Powell.

Lower Basin Shared Reductions

The federal operating plan adopts proposals negotiated among Lower Basin states (Nevada, Arizona, and California) to reduce combined water diversions by 3.2 million acre-feet through 2028.

While Nevada absorbs a 28% reduction, Arizona will reduce its use by approximately 31% and California by 12%.

Managing Southern Nevada’s Allocation

Water policy experts note that due to aggressive municipal recycling, turf removal programs, and strict indoor water return protocols managed by the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA), Nevada currently consumes significantly less than its maximum allotment.

As a result, municipal leaders do not anticipate immediate residential water rationing, though public conservation guidelines will remain strictly enforced across Clark County.
