Metro Police Mourn Loss of Officer Austin Abdelnabi Following Shooting Near Interstate 11

LAS VEGAS, NV — The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) is mourning the loss of Police Officer Austin Abdelnabi, who died from injuries sustained during an exchange of gunfire with an armed suspect near Interstate 11 and Mountain Vista Street.

The incident marks LVMPD’s ninth officer-involved shooting of 2026.

Emergency Response on East Tropicana Avenue

According to LVMPD preliminary records, communications dispatchers received emergency calls around 3:57 PM on Tuesday reporting an erratic individual waving a handgun at a business along East Tropicana Avenue.

Responding patrol officers located the suspect near Mountain Vista Street under the Interstate 11 pass. As officers approached to engage, the suspect fired upon the officers, initiating an exchange of gunfire.

Tributes Flow Across Nevada

Officer Abdelnabi—a United States Marine Corps veteran who joined Metro Police in November 2023—was rushed to University Medical Center (UMC) Trauma, where he succumbed to his injuries despite emergency medical efforts. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“Officer Abdelnabi paid the ultimate price to ensure that Las Vegans could live in a safe community,” stated Michelle Bays, Chair of the Board of Directors for the Nevada Police Foundation. “We will never forget his sacrifice.”

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo and local civic organizations issued statements offering condolences to the fallen officer’s family and law enforcement colleagues.
