LAS VEGAS, NV — Hundreds of healthcare workers, community partners, and labor leaders lined Maryland Parkway outside Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center to stage an informational picket, demanding that hospital operator HCA Healthcare address severe chronic staffing shortages and deliver inflation-matched wage increases.

Organized by SEIU Local 1107—which represents roughly 5,000 healthcare workers across HCA’s Southern Nevada network, including Sunrise, MountainView, and Southern Hills hospitals—the demonstration brought together frontline nurses, tech specialists, and support staff who have been engaged in contract negotiations with HCA Healthcare since January 2026.

Extreme Conditions and Rising Workload Pressures

Demonstrators braved triple-digit summer temperatures outside the state’s largest hospital facility to draw public attention to growing patient safety concerns.

Union leaders emphasized that despite HCA Healthcare reporting $6.78 billion in net income in 2025, frontline hospital staff continue to face unsustainable patient loads and uncompetitive wages.

Among the core contract demands put forward by SEIU Local 1107 are:

Contractual Staffing Ratios: Establishing enforceable nurse-to-patient staffing standards inside the contract to guarantee safe coverage across hospital departments.
Wage Improvements: Establishing a clear pathway to a $25 per hour minimum wage for all service and support personnel alongside wage scale raises that keep pace with inflation.
Worker Protections: Expanding paid vacation, sick leave, and workplace safety protections.

“Our work is how they’re making billions. We are just asking for fair compensation,” stated Jody Domineck, a 20-year pediatric nurse at Sunrise Hospital and Secretary-Treasurer of SEIU Local 1107. “There’s been multiple studies that show that the more patients you have, the higher the risk is to all patients. We need ratio guarantees in our contract to ensure proper care.”

The picket drew broad labor solidarity across Clark County, with Teamsters Local 631 sending semi-trucks to circle Maryland Parkway and honk in support, alongside allies from the Nevada State AFL-CIO and the Southern Nevada Building Trades Unions.

HCA Healthcare and Sunrise Health System Response

In an official statement addressing the demonstration, a spokesperson for Sunrise Health System emphasized that negotiations remain underway at the bargaining table.

“At Sunrise Health System, we value every member of our team and remain committed to reaching a fair agreement through good-faith negotiations,” an HCA spokesperson noted. “While we respect our employees’ right to peacefully demonstrate, portraying this as a patient safety issue is inaccurate. The outstanding issues are about compensation. We believe the best place to reach an agreement is at the bargaining table.”

Contract bargaining sessions between SEIU Local 1107 negotiating committees and HCA Healthcare executives are scheduled to continue through August.
