BOULDER CITY, NV — Federal park rangers and Clark County forensic investigators are examining human skeletal remains discovered along the receding shoreline of after reservoir elevations plunged near all-time historic lows.
The discovery was made at Boulder Beach on the Nevada side of the reservoir, marking the latest historical forensic site exposed as prolonged Southwestern drought and aridification shrink the nation’s largest man-made reservoir.

Discovery at Boulder Beach
According to the National Park Service Interagency Communications Center, park visitors wading through shallow water along the shoreline spotted the skeletal remains submerged among rocks.
Witness Dianelis Molina Cruz told local reporters that a member of her party was handling rocks along the waterline when he grabbed what appeared to be a human jaw with intact teeth and dental fillings. Visitors immediately contacted emergency dispatchers, prompting an on-scene response from National Park Service rangers, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), and the Clark County Coroner’s Office.
LVMPD confirmed that detectives took a “non-criminal, dead body report” after preliminary evaluations revealed no initial indicators of suspicious foul play. The remains were transferred to the Clark County medical examiner to determine identity, gender, cause, and approximate post-mortem interval.

Drought Exposes Submerged History
The recovery coincides with severe hydrological declines across the Colorado River Basin. According to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Lake Mead’s water elevation recently hovered between 1,039.7 and 1,040.4 feet above sea level—breaking the reservoir’s previous modern record low recorded in July 2022.
The dropping water line has previously exposed sunken World War II-era landing craft, a B-29 bomber wreck, and the inundated 19th-century Mormon settlement of St. Thomas. Similar low-water conditions during the summer of 2022 unearthed five sets of human remains across Boulder Beach, Callville Bay, and Hemenway Harbor, several of which were later identified through advanced forensic DNA testing as historical drowning victims dating back to the 1970s and 1990s.
“As reservoir levels decline during extreme heat and ongoing drought cycles, geological formations and historical items that have rested underwater for decades become visible,” park authorities noted. “Visitors who encounter suspected human remains or cultural artifacts are urged not to disturb the site and to contact park rangers immediately.”
