Metro Launches Strip-Wide Pedestrian Safety and Crosswalk Crackdown After Valley Road Fatalities Reach 90

By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, October 1, 2026 12:33 pm

LAS VEGAS, NV — The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Traffic Bureau has initiated a high-visibility pedestrian safety and crosswalk enforcement blitz across the Las Vegas Boulevard resort corridor following the death of a pedestrian struck inside a marked crosswalk earlier this week.

The enforcement initiative—directed by Metro’s Traffic Bureau Collision Investigation Section—deploys dedicated motorcycle units and foot-patrol officers between Tropicana Avenue and Sunset Road. The operation focuses on strict right-of-way compliance at signalized intersections and aims to curb mid-block jaywalking along the high-density resort strip.

The targeted campaign follows the confirmed passing of a 46-year-old pedestrian at Sunrise Hospital after being struck by an SUV making a left turn onto South Las Vegas Boulevard at Four Seasons Drive—marking the 90th traffic-related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction in 2026.

Zero Tolerance at Marked Intersections

Under Nevada Revised Statute (NRS) 484B.283, motorists must yield the right-of-way, slowing down or stopping completely, for any pedestrian crossing within an unsignalized or signal-controlled marked crosswalk.

Metro supervisors confirmed that the ongoing crackdown is operating under a zero-tolerance policy for vehicles that crowd crosswalk boundaries or initiate turns while pedestrians remain within the active half of the roadway.

“When you have millions of visitors sharing roadway real estate with commuter traffic, a split-second of driver inattention can be catastrophic,” Metro Traffic Bureau officials emphasized in an enforcement directive. “Drivers must look completely through their turns and yield. Simultaneously, pedestrians must utilize designated crosswalks and overhead pedestrian bridges instead of gambling their lives against moving traffic.”

Special attention is focused on intersections framing major resort driveways, including Four Seasons Drive, Russell Road, and Reno Avenue, where long sightlines often lead drivers to misjudge closing speeds against pedestrians on foot.

Addressing Pedestrian Foot Traffic and Mid-Block Crossings

While turning motorists face direct scrutiny, officers are also issuing warnings and citations to pedestrians attempting dangerous shortcuts.

Despite the valley’s network of overhead pedestrian skywalks connecting primary gaming resorts, foot-traffic analysts note recurring safety issues south of Tropicana Avenue, where wide surface street crossings require pedestrians to clear up to eight travel lanes.

Metro confirmed that traffic units will sustain continuous high-visibility presence and radar enforcement through the upcoming weekend, coordinating with the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and Clark County Public Works to review signal phasing and crosswalk lighting across Southern Nevada.
