AMERICA INVESTS AGAIN: GDP Surges 3.4% as Business Investment Hits 15-Year High

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The American economy came roaring into the second half of 2026, expanding at a 3.4 percent annualized rate as consumers kept spending and businesses poured money into equipment, factories and future production.
New data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis show real GDP accelerated sharply during the third quarter, up from 2.2 percent in the previous three months. Investment, consumer spending and government spending all contributed to the increase.
The Trump White House wasted little time taking a victory lap.
“President Donald J. Trump’s America First agenda is delivering as promised,” the administration declared Thursday, pointing to stronger growth, surging investment and economic performance that exceeded many forecasts.
The investment numbers were the real eye-popper.
Private investment in plants and equipment grew at a 9.4 percent annualized rate during the third quarter, while broader business investment increased nearly 13 percent, according to the White House. The administration said that marked the strongest quarterly business-investment growth in nearly 15 years.
Businesses also dramatically increased spending on equipment. Reuters reported that equipment investment jumped 20.9 percent, fueled in part by spending connected to artificial intelligence and new technology.
Consumers were not sitting on the sidelines either.
Personal consumption grew at a 3.8 percent annualized rate during the quarter, helping power the overall expansion. Over the first three quarters of 2026, the economy has grown at an average 2.7 percent annualized pace, according to the White House.
The administration is also pointing to what America is importing as evidence that companies are preparing to build more at home.
Capital goods, including machinery and industrial equipment, now represent a record share of U.S. goods imports, while consumer goods have fallen to 17 percent, tied for their lowest share on record. The White House argues that the shift, combined with rising domestic investment, shows companies are putting money into expanding American productive capacity.
The GDP report arrives as Trump continues pushing tariffs, tax reductions, deregulation and domestic energy production as central pieces of his economic agenda. The administration has repeatedly argued those policies are encouraging companies to move capital and production into the United States.
There are still pressure points.
Inflation remains above the Federal Reserve’s 2 percent target. The Fed’s preferred inflation measure reached 3.6 percent in September, and economists have warned that consumer spending has been growing faster than household income, raising questions about how long the current pace can continue.
And Thursday’s 3.4 percent figure is only the government’s advance estimate. BEA will release its second estimate on November 25.
But the headline number is difficult to miss: growth accelerated, consumers kept buying and American companies dramatically stepped up investment.
The White House calls it the Trump economic agenda taking hold.
Businesses, meanwhile, are voting with their dollars.
