Several Law Enforcement Agencies Responds to a Fentanyl Exposure Incident on Sawyer Way in Sparks

SPARKS, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe)- Several law enforcement agencies responded to a fentanyl exposure incident on Sawyer Way in Sparks over the weekend. Three persons were discovered unconscious, thought to have overdosed on fentanyl, according to Sparks Police.

These three people were taken to a nearby hospital and are currently doing well, according to officials.

Fentanyl overdose is exceedingly deadly. If you suspect someone has overdosed on fentanyl or another substance, contact 911 immediately.

Initially, fentanyl was designed as a powerful prescription painkiller, primarily for persons suffering from chronic pain who had established a tolerance for other long-acting narcotic pain medications or who were nearing the end of their lives.

Fentanyl is classified as a narcotic and belongs to the opioid drug class. According to officials, even in modest dosages, the medication is extremely deadly.

“It could be just opening up a little zip lock baggy that may contain a little powder dust comes up and you wouldn’t even see it or know it and the side effects from that can be catastrophic.” says Nick Chambers, Public Information Officer for the Sparks Police Department.

According to American Addiction Center authorities, if someone is overdosing on fentanyl, one thing you can do is deliver Naloxone, which is an opioid antagonist that may be used to fast reverse opioid overdoses.

Narcan nasal spray can also be used to reverse opioid sedation.

“What’s great about Narcan is there aren’t going to be any side effects so if someone is using a certain type of drug Narcan would reverse the side effects and there’s not going to be any permanent damage to the person.” Chambers adds.

Both are available at local pharmacies.

They also recommend that you stay with the individual and monitor their breathing, turn them on their side to avoid choking, and remain with the person until medical help arrives.
