UNR Offers Free Radon Detection Kits To Reno Community

By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, February 7, 2023 6:17 pm

NEVADA – The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) is adopting a proactive approach to enhancing the health and safety of the Reno community by distributing free radon detection kits to people in the area, allowing them to test their houses for the presence of radon gas.

Radon is a tasteless, odorless, and colorless gas that is emitted from the earth and can have severe health repercussions if it accumulates in a home.

The short-term radon test kits are provided by UNR’s Nevada Extension’s Radon Education Program and are available through February 28. As part of their commitment to public health, clear instructions on how to use them correctly will also be provided.

The kits are easy to use and will offer a readout of the radon levels. If the readings are too high, UNR can give additional resources and information to help the resident take the required steps to limit their radon exposure.

UNR encourages residents to take use of this free service in order to safeguard their own and their families’ health. In addition, the CDC and EPA encourage all Nevadans to have their houses tested for radon every two years.

In addition, a lecture will be given on the radon risk, and free kits will be distributed:

8 February, 17:30, at the Genoa Town Hall, 2220 Main Street, Minden, Nevada.
