Washoe County School District Implements New Variance Policy to Simplify School Transfers

NEVADA – The Washoe County School District (WCSD) has introduced a new variance policy aimed at streamlining the process for students to attend their preferred schools, provided there is adequate capacity available. The district aims to alleviate the burden on families and principals, making the application process more accessible.

During the previous academic year, approximately 6,600 students were granted variances, each requiring additional steps for both families and school administrators. Recognizing the need for change, WCSD Superintendent Dr. Susan Enfield emphasized the importance of simplifying the process and reducing the unnecessary complexities faced by families and principals.

Under the new policy, all variance applications must be submitted by the upcoming deadline of Thursday, June 15. If a school’s capacity remains below 90 percent and teaching positions are fully staffed, variance requests will be accepted. However, if a school exceeds the 90 percent threshold, students will be placed on a waitlist. As vacancies arise, a lottery system will be implemented, with the principal randomly selecting names to fill the available seats.

The review of variance requests will be completed before August 31, allowing sufficient time for families to plan for the upcoming academic year. Furthermore, students will no longer be required to renew their variances annually. The variance will remain valid as long as the student remains enrolled in the same school.

Dr. Enfield emphasized that the primary objective of this policy change is to provide increased opportunities for students. As a public education system, WCSD aims to welcome and accommodate all students who seek education within its schools to the best of its ability.

It is important to note that students with variances are responsible for their transportation to school, as individual transportation services cannot be provided for each student due to logistical constraints.

For families relocating to the area after June 15, 2023, variance applications will still be considered. Additionally, families with multiple children can submit variance requests for each child residing in the same household.

WCSD is actively working to determine the capacity figures for all schools. However, families are encouraged to promptly submit their variance forms to expedite the processing of their requests.
