Mt. Charleston Elementary School’s Fate Hangs in the Balance as CCSD Offers Options Amid Parent Outrage

Days before the start of the school year, Clark County School District (CCSD) officials faced a heated community meeting in Mt. Charleston as they presented options to address the fate of Lundy Elementary, the community’s sole elementary school.

The meeting, attended by Interim Superintendent Brenda Larsen-Mitchell, Trustees Lisa Guzman and Lisa Satory, and other school officials, was met with frustration from parents and community members who have been grappling with the school’s closure since last August due to storm damage.

Students have been temporarily relocated to Indian Springs Elementary, resulting in arduous commutes that begin as early as 6:15 a.m. for an 8 a.m. start time. Parent Monique Sweeney, who withdrew her son from the school due to the commute challenges, voiced her discontent, stating, “It took you guys a year to get up here to face us. I don’t understand how this is okay.”

CCSD officials outlined potential solutions, including repairs to Lundy Elementary, estimated to cost upwards of $6.5 million and take two to three years. However, they also explored alternative options, such as utilizing the local library for temporary or permanent classes, or constructing a permanent addition to the library as a less costly long-term solution.

Tod Story, CCSD’s director of communications, assured the community that all options are being considered. “We’re looking at everything, considering all options, both temporary and permanent,” he stated. The gathered information will be presented to the Board of Trustees at a future meeting for further discussion and decision-making.

The urgency of the situation is underscored by the impending start of the school year. The CCSD Board of Trustees has scheduled a work session for Wednesday to specifically address the future of Lundy Elementary, with hopes of reaching a resolution that addresses the community’s concerns and educational needs.
