Veterinarian Under Fire: Dr. Shawn Frehner Found Dead Amid Animal Cruelty Investigation

By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, April 22, 2025 8:48 am

In a case that underscores the intense scrutiny professionals can face in the digital age, Dr. Shawn Frehner, a Las Vegas-based veterinarian, was found deceased near the Boulder Islands in Lake Mead National Recreation Area. His body was recovered on April 18, following a multi-agency search initiated after his disappearance on April 6.

Dr. Frehner’s disappearance came shortly after a video surfaced online, allegedly showing him kicking a horse during a medical procedure in Pahrump. The footage, which quickly went viral, led to widespread condemnation and an animal cruelty investigation by the Nye County Sheriff’s Office. In a now-deleted social media post, Dr. Frehner defended his actions, stating that the kick was an attempt to reposition the horse to aid its breathing during sedation.

The incident sparked a heated debate on social media, with many calling for the revocation of Dr. Frehner’s veterinary license. His family reported him missing after finding his truck abandoned at Hemenway Harbor, with his personal belongings still inside. Authorities have not released the cause of death, and the investigation remains ongoing.

This case highlights the powerful impact of social media on public perception and the importance of due process. While accountability is crucial, it’s equally important to ensure that individuals are treated fairly and investigations are conducted thoroughly before conclusions are drawn.
