Fuel Revenue Indexing Program in Clark County Extended Through 2036 to Fund Roads

The Clark County Commission has voted to extend the fuel revenue indexing program for an additional ten years, allowing the county to continue diverting a portion of its motor-fuel tax toward road construction and infrastructure projects. The move ensures that the program, which was set to expire at the end of 2026, remains in effect through 2036.

Officials with the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) expect the indexed fuel-tax revenue to generate about $50 million to $55 million annually in Clark County, with modest increases over time, supporting major transportation improvements.

During the approval process, city leaders from across the valley—including representatives from Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas and Boulder City—endorsed the extension, citing past successes of the program in funding major road and transit projects.

The indexing mechanism has already contributed roughly $1 billion to the region’s transportation efforts since its original implementation, enabling the completion of hundreds of projects and leveraging additional federal dollars.

One commission member opposed the measure, arguing that the originally voter-approved tax measure should have again been put before the public for approval, rather than extended by the commission alone.

Under the approved plan, any continuation of the indexing program beyond December 2036 will require voter approval in a general election.
