Southern Nevada Adds 4,400 Jobs Despite Tourism Slump

Despite a continued slump in tourism, employment in the Las Vegas area rose by about 4,400 jobs in September, according to newly released data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).

That represents a 0.4% increase in total employment from August, underscoring that the region’s labor market is showing signs of resilience even as visitor numbers remain weak.

The gains were not limited to a single sector: while leisure and hospitality — once the economy’s backbone — added 5,100 jobs, the broader uptick suggests growth is spreading into other industries, potentially helping diversify Southern Nevada’s economic base.

Local business leaders say the increase offers optimism amid challenging economic headwinds, but caution that stable growth will likely depend on further economic diversification and consumer demand beyond tourism spending.
