A man injured during an officer-involved shooting in Las Vegas last week is now facing a murder charge after a maintenance worker died from injuries sustained in the incident.
Court records show Victor Vondrasek, 46, appeared in court Monday for his initial hearing. During the proceeding, a prosecutor informed Eric Goodman that the maintenance worker involved in the case died Friday from his injuries.
The Clark County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Orlando Sosa, 39, of Las Vegas. As of Monday, officials said the cause and manner of death were still pending.
Following Sosa’s death, prosecutors filed an amended criminal complaint charging Vondrasek with murder. He had previously been charged with two counts of attempted murder.
A public defender appointed to represent Vondrasek stated the defense would reserve the right to request bail at a later hearing. Vondrasek is currently being held without bail. Judge Goodman scheduled a preliminary hearing for Monday, January 26.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 6, while Deputy Sgt. Mark Ruesch was serving an eviction notice at an apartment complex near Sandhill and Sunset roads, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
Police said Sosa used a ladder to access a second-floor balcony after receiving no response at the front door. Authorities allege that Vondrasek then forced his way through a sliding glass door and attacked Sosa with a machete. After hearing screams, Ruesch climbed to the balcony, where police say Vondrasek attempted to attack him as well. Ruesch then fired his weapon, striking Vondrasek.
All three individuals were transported to a hospital. Police previously reported that Sosa had suffered critical injuries, while Ruesch sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
LVMPD, which oversees the Las Vegas Constable’s Office, said Ruesch is an independent contractor and will not be assigned additional work while the investigation remains ongoing.
