NWS Warns of Severe Health Risks as Temperatures Soar 30 Degrees Above Normal

By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, March 17, 2026 9:19 am

The National Weather Service has issued a rare and dangerous Extreme Heat Warning for the Las Vegas valley as an unprecedented spring heat wave moves into Southern Nevada. Forecasters expect temperatures to climb nearly 30 degrees above seasonal norms starting Wednesday morning and lasting through Sunday evening. This historically early heat event is projected to push daytime highs toward the 100 degree mark which would easily shatter existing monthly records.

Meteorologists noted that the extreme conditions are particularly hazardous because residents and the high volume of spring break tourists have not yet acclimated to summer-like heat. The warning covers Clark County along with portions of northwestern Arizona and southeastern California. Daily records are in jeopardy every afternoon this week with the most intense heat expected between Friday and Sunday.

Public health officials are urging everyone to drink plenty of fluids and stay in air-conditioned environments. Strenuous outdoor activities should be limited to the very early morning or late evening hours. Authorities specifically warned against leaving children or pets in vehicles as interior temperatures can reach lethal levels in a matter of minutes. Those working outdoors are encouraged to schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded areas to avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
