LAS VEGAS, NV — A 50-year-old Las Vegas man is in custody this morning following a tragic Sunday night collision that claimed the life of a man in a wheelchair and marked the valley’s 39th traffic-related fatality of 2026.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:11 PM on Sunday, April 12, 2026, on Fremont Street, just south of East Oakey Boulevard.

The Collision on Boulder Highway

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), evidence at the scene and witness statements indicate that a 43-year-old male in a wheelchair was attempting to cross the northbound travel lanes of Boulder Highway, south of East Oakey Boulevard.

The pedestrian was crossing from east to west, outside of a marked or unmarked crosswalk, when he entered the path of a 2013 KIA Optima traveling northbound. The front left of the KIA struck the pedestrian and his wheelchair, projecting him in a northwestern direction into the dirt center median.

DUI Arrest and Fatality Count

The driver of the KIA, identified as Johnny Richardson Jr., brought his vehicle to an immediate stop and called 911. Arriving medical personnel determined the pedestrian was beyond medical intervention and pronounced him deceased at the scene.

Investigators noted that Richardson Jr. displayed signs of impairment and he was subsequently arrested on suspicion of DUI-related charges.

This collision is officially designated as Fatal #39 for 2026. It followed just minutes after Fatal #38, a multi-vehicle collision involving a pickup truck at East Charleston Boulevard and South Christy Lane on Monday morning, illustrating a particularly deadly 24-hour window for Las Vegas motorists and pedestrians.
