At last night’s board meeting, Lyon County School District Superintendent Wayne Workman announced his resignation effective June 30, 2024. The fourth largest school district in Nevada includes 18 schools serving approximately 9,000 students and 1,100 employees.

In his statement to the board, he cited his need, after 17 years with the district, to address “family challenges and circumstances at the center if his life.”

Superintendent Workman told The Globe:

My resignation is a family decision due to personal and family circumstances. I am not retiring and I intend to continue working in the education field, hopefully in the Lyon County School District.  

I think my letter (see below) captures most of it. I love the Lyon County School District and all of the students and staff who make up this incredible organization. Our dedicated staff are literally miracle workers as they meet the needs of students and families every day. My family and I are so privileged to have served with them and we look forward to continued service.

Workman’s announcement precedes an expected resignation by Douglas County School District (DCSD) Superintendent Keith Lewis who, as the Globe has reported, has been at odds with the newly-elected majority on the school board. DCSD serves approximately 5,400 students and 760 employees.

Embattled Clark County Superintendent Dr. Jesus Jara has faced calls for his resignation from the Clark County Education Association, the largest teachers union in Nevada. Jara has publicly stated that he intends to remain int the district until 2026. The school district is the fifth largest school district in the country serving over 300,000 students and 40,000 employees.

Workman and Ellis had recently negotiated new employment contracts with their respective districts.
