OPINION: America First Equals World Peace? Trump’s Bold Moves on the Global Stage

By Sam Fant, May 15, 2025 5:40 am

In a world rife with geopolitical tensions and longstanding conflicts, the notion of “America First” often conjures images of isolationism and unilateralism. Yet, President Donald J. Trump’s recent diplomatic engagements suggest a different narrative, one where assertive American leadership seeks to recalibrate global relations and foster peace through strength and strategic partnerships.

A Historic Shift in the Middle East

During his recent visit to Riyadh, President Trump announced the lifting of all U.S. sanctions on Syria, a nation long ostracized by Western powers. This unexpected move came after a meeting with Syria’s new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former militant who played a pivotal role in ousting Bashar al-Assad. Trump’s decision aims to facilitate Syria’s reintegration into the international community and encourage its participation in the Abraham Accords, a series of normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab nations initiated during Trump’s first term .

While critics express concern over al-Sharaa’s past affiliations, supporters argue that engaging with emerging leaders willing to break from historical hostilities is essential for lasting peace. Trump’s approach underscores a pragmatic strategy: incentivize cooperation through economic relief and diplomatic recognition.

Bridging Divides in South Asia

In South Asia, Trump’s administration has brokered a fragile ceasefire between nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan. By leveraging potential trade agreements, the U.S. encouraged both nations to halt escalating military actions in the disputed Kashmir region. Although India publicly downplayed external influence, the ceasefire marks a significant de-escalation in a historically volatile area .

Pursuing Peace in Eastern Europe

Turning to Eastern Europe, Trump has signaled a willingness to engage directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin to initiate peace talks concerning the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. While details remain sparse, the administration’s openness to dialogue represents a departure from previous policies that favored sanctions over direct engagement .

Economic Diplomacy as a Tool for Peace

Central to Trump’s foreign policy is the belief that economic prosperity can be a catalyst for peace. His administration recently secured a $600 billion investment commitment from Saudi Arabia, aimed at bolstering U.S. infrastructure, defense, and technology sectors . Such deals not only strengthen bilateral ties but also create interdependencies that can deter conflict.

A New Paradigm or Political Theater?

These developments prompt a critical question: Could such diplomatic strides have occurred under a different administration? While it’s speculative, the rapid succession of these initiatives within Trump’s tenure suggests a unique approach to foreign policy, one that prioritizes direct engagement, economic incentives, and a willingness to disrupt traditional diplomatic norms.

As the world watches these unfolding events, the efficacy and longevity of Trump’s strategies remain to be seen. However, the current trajectory indicates a concerted effort to position the United States not as a distant overseer but as an active architect of global peace.
