In our 20-part series, Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill: Nevada’s Wins and Losses, we face a gut punch to Nevada’s $15 billion casino industry. The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (Sec. 1104) taxes gambling losses as income, risking 50,000 jobs in Las Vegas and Reno. A bettor like Jake, losing $10,000 at blackjack, now owes taxes on that loss, cutting his spending at local bars.
The Nevada Resort Association predicts a 10% revenue drop, hitting small casinos like those in Mesquite hardest. In 2019, tax breaks fueled a Strip expansion, but this could shrink tourism, which drives 25% of Nevada’s GDP. The bill aims to curb addiction, but it kneecaps an industry employing 200,000. Macau’s casinos, untaxed, may lure visitors away.
Nevada’s casinos are our economic engine, dazzling the world. As this tax looms, consider: Can we reinvent gaming’s allure, or will the Strip’s lights dim under federal overreach?
