Struggling Leaders, Broken Schools, How Nevada’s Superintendents Can Step Up

Part 6:

I sat down with my son’s principal last week, asked him why fights and drugs are out of control. He mumbled about “complex issues” and dodged my eyes. I left that meeting fuming. Nevada’s school leaders are struggling, hiding behind excuses while our kids suffer. I’m a Reno mom, not a politician, but even I can see the people running our schools need more support to fix this disaster.

Look at the track record. Clark and Washoe Counties burned through superintendents in 2024, each one promising change but facing roadblocks. Teachers are quitting too, 15% every year, because they’re stuck in a system that doesn’t back them up. I read about a Reno principal who let a kid back in class after threatening a teacher, no consequences. My heart aches for those teachers, for my kids stuck in their classrooms. Leaders could use stronger tools to take control, but they’re overwhelmed. They’re too busy writing memos and dodging parents like me.

I’m anxious about what this means for Nevada, a state raising kids who can’t read, won’t show up, and aren’t safe. I love Sarah and Ben, and I hate seeing them trapped in this mess. The anger’s building, and I’m not alone. Parents across this state are done with the status quo. I’m turning my sights on the governor next, because he’s got the power to help turn this around, and I believe he can lead the way.

Stay tuned, in Part 7, I explore Governor Lombardo’s big opportunity to lead and turn Nevada’s schools around for good.
