Nevada’s Gift to the Nation: Capitol Christmas Tree from the Silver State Lights Up Washington

For the first time in American history, the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree comes from Nevada, and Washington, D.C. is glowing a little brighter because of it.

“Silver Belle,” a 53-foot red fir harvested from the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, was lit during a ceremony on the West Front Lawn this week, marking a historic moment for the Silver State and a rare spotlight on Nevada’s vast public lands. Thousands gathered as the Nevada-sourced tree, decked out in ornaments handmade by Nevadans from every corner of the state, officially kicked off the holiday season in the nation’s capital.

House Speaker Mike Johnson highlighted the significance of the moment, posting on X: “Honored to take part in tonight’s National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. The 53-foot red fir from Nevada is a reminder that America’s strength comes from communities across the country — and from our shared commitment to this republic. As we approach our nation’s 250th year, we must stay focused on protecting the principles that built — and made — America great.”

The theme of this year’s tree, “Starry Skies to Neon Lights — Spirit of the Silver State,” reflects Nevada’s balance of rugged natural beauty and its unmistakable bright-light identity. From Ely to Reno to Las Vegas, communities contributed thousands of ornaments to decorate the towering fir before it made its cross-country journey to Washington.

This year’s lighting is more than a ceremony; it’s a symbolic reminder of how often Nevada is overlooked on the national stage, despite being home to the largest national forest in the lower 48 and some of the country’s most resilient communities. For Nevadans, seeing “Silver Belle” standing tall on the Capitol lawn is a moment of pride and a subtle nod that the state’s role in America runs far deeper than casinos and tourism.

The tree will remain lit nightly through the holiday season, greeting visitors, lawmakers, and curious passersby with a little piece of Nevada, a reminder that even in the most divided political climate, the roots of this country still stretch coast to coast.
