Clark County Leaders Hear Resident Frustrations Over Homelessness at Metro Forum

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department hosted its first First Tuesday Community Outreach meeting of the year, inviting residents to speak directly with officers and local officials about public safety and neighborhood concerns.

The open forum allowed attendees to ask questions and share firsthand experiences, with homelessness emerging as the most frequently raised issue. Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom acknowledged the scale of the problem, describing homelessness as one of the most significant challenges facing his district and the broader Las Vegas Valley. He noted that while the issue cannot be resolved quickly, county leaders remain focused on long-term solutions.

Segerblom emphasized the importance of collaboration between residents, county leadership, and Metro police, saying community input helps officials better understand conditions on the ground and shapes future policy decisions. He added that regular dialogue is essential to building trust and ensuring residents feel heard.

According to county data, nearly 8,000 people were counted as experiencing homelessness in Clark County during a single-night survey in 2024, representing an increase of about 20 percent from the previous year.

Several residents expressed frustration with the pace of progress. One attendee, Laura Harvey, shared concerns about safety in parts of the city and said the issue has affected her sense of security. Harvey said attending the meeting was a step toward seeking more immediate action after years of contacting elected officials through letters and emails.

Metro police and county representatives said the monthly First Tuesday meetings are intended to strengthen communication, guide public safety strategies, and encourage ongoing community involvement as the region works to address homelessness and related concerns.
