A discussion over University Medical Center’s CEO compensation turned contentious during a recent Clark County Commission meeting, drawing criticism from commissioners and union leaders amid fears of potential layoffs.
Commissioner April Becker raised concern about CEO Mason Van Houweling’s base salary—reported around $840,000—with added bonuses pushing it past $1 million. Becker questioned the optics of awarding a bonus amid talk of cutting hospital staff positions.
Union leaders echoed the concern. Michelle Maese, president of SEIU Local 1107, expressed frustration, noting that many union members are themselves facing job insecurity and financial hardship. She contrasted the CEO’s raise with alleged plans to terminate upwards of 100 employees.
In response, UMC issued a statement defending the CEO’s compensation by referencing industry benchmarks. The hospital noted that in 2025, average salary increases for staff ranged from 6.6 % to 7.5 %, and maintained that Van Houweling’s 7.1 % increase aligns with that range. The statement also emphasized ongoing collaboration with unions to explore cost-saving strategies.
No layoffs have been confirmed at this time, though many employees remain anxious amid the uncertainty. Hospital leadership and union representatives say they will continue to negotiate and evaluate options to avoid workforce reductions.
