Duane "Keffe D" Davis Convicted of First-Degree Murder in 1996 Killing of Rap Legend Tupac Shakur

LAS VEGAS, NV — Nearly three decades after the drive-by shooting of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur on the Las Vegas Strip, a Clark County District Court jury delivered a historic verdict, finding former Compton gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis guilty of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon.

The jury reached the unanimous verdict following less than three hours of deliberation inside the Regional Justice Center. District Court Judge Carli Kierny remanded the 63-year-old defendant into custody without bail and scheduled formal sentencing for October 13, 2026, where Davis faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Accountability Decades in the Making

The conviction marks the first and only criminal resolution in the September 7, 1996, ambush at Flamingo Road and Koval Lane that claimed Shakur’s life at age 25.

Throughout the trial, Chief Deputy District Attorneys Binu Palal and Marc DiGiacomo presented Davis’s own public and private confessions—including eight hours of recorded 2008 police proffer interviews, television documentaries, and his 2019 self-published memoir, Compton Street Legend.

Under Nevada’s accomplice liability statutes, prosecutors proved that Davis served as the “shot-caller” who orchestrated the armed retaliation following a fight between Shakur and Davis’s nephew, Orlando Anderson, in the lobby of the MGM Grand.

“For nearly 18 years, Duane Davis has told the police, television, books, YouTube interviewers, anybody that will listen,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Binu Palal argued during closing statements. “He has told you he is responsible for the murder of Tupac Shakur. Tell him you hear him. Find him guilty.”

Emotional Scenes in Court and Planned Appeal

As the court clerk read the guilty verdict, Shakur’s sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, wept and embraced relatives in the courtroom gallery.

Defense attorney Michael Sanft, who argued during trial that the state failed to produce physical murder weapon forensics and relied on exaggerated storytelling, confirmed that the defense will file an appeal.

The verdict closes a defining chapter in American music history and Las Vegas criminal jurisprudence, arriving just two weeks before the 30th anniversary of Shakur’s passing.
