LAS VEGAS – Las Vegas Metropolitan Police are probing a disturbing incident in which an 82-year-old Asian woman was viciously assaulted, sprayed with mace, and beaten with a stick. The assault, which took place at 1:30 a.m. near Fremont Street and 9th Street in Downtown Las Vegas, has raised concerns about whether the elderly woman was specifically targeted.
Witnesses to the incident revealed that the victim resided in the area and had gone out late at night for a snack with her husband. According to those on the scene, the attacker made unsettling remarks about “God” before spraying the woman with what appeared to be mace. A video recording of the incident captured the assailant beating the woman with a stick, while the audio recorded her screams and neighbors shouting for the violence to stop.
Upon calling 911, witnesses rushed to assist the injured woman. “We saw the victim sitting on the sidewalk, and multiple cop cars were there assisting her. She had visible bruising,” one witness recounted.
The victim was subsequently transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
Several neighbors who were aware of the incident expressed reluctance to be identified on camera, fearing potential retaliation from the attacker. While acknowledging the rising presence of homeless individuals and individuals with mental health issues on the streets, many said they had never witnessed an attack of this severity before.
Some residents shared their concerns that the assault could have been racially motivated, given the victim’s Asian heritage. They emphasized that attacks on Asian communities have seen an increase since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police are currently investigating the incident, and further information regarding the victim’s health status and the search for the suspect is pending.
