A new line would relieve congestion on other transmission lines and expand access to low-cost renewable energy in the Western U.S. It is one of three transmission lines crossing six states announced under a $1.3 billion commitment from the Energy Department.

The federal government will negotiate a contract with the Cross-Tie 500kV Transmission Line to buy a portion of the transmission capacity once the project is complete. Nevada’s U.S. senators say the project will also create more than 4,000 jobs.

“Nevada is generating record amounts of clean energy and we need to upgrade our power grid capacity in order to keep up with demand,” U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nevada, said in a statement. “This new transmission line will connect clean energy projects across the region, lowering costs for Nevada families and supporting thousands of good-paying jobs.

The Cross-Tie 500kV Transmission Line is expected to be completed in 2027.
