RENO, NV — Federal disaster officials approved emergency funding on Wednesday to bolster wildland firefighting operations across northern Nevada, as the Stallion Fire expanded past 30,000 acres near Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribal Land.

The Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG)—authorized by the Acting Regional Administrator for FEMA Region 9—enables federal funds to reimburse up to 75% of state and tribal suppression costs.

Severe Threats to Pyramid Lake Communities

The wildland blaze ignited Monday, August 10, in heavy sagebrush and high-desert fuels. Driven by erratic afternoon wind gusts and single-digit humidity, the fire advanced rapidly toward residential perimeters, prompting mandatory evacuation orders for approximately 2,600 residents across Nixon, Sutcliffe, and Wadsworth.

Interagency strike teams—combining Nevada Division of Forestry, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and tribal fire crews—have prioritized structural defense along rural road corridors.

“FMAG declarations provide immediate federal financial relief, ensuring state and local agencies can deploy every necessary resource without exhausting municipal budgets,” federal emergency officials noted.

Resource Mobilization and Air Support

The approved federal grant allows interagency commanders to maintain heavy aerial tanker rotations and expand mobile field camps, equipment staging, and handline construction crews through the weekend.
