Governor Lombardo Signs ‘Jaya’s Law’: Wrong-Way Driving Now a Crime in Nevada

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has signed Assembly Bill 111, known as “Jaya’s Law,” into law. This legislation reclassifies wrong-way driving from a civil infraction to a misdemeanor offense, aiming to deter dangerous driving behaviors that endanger innocent lives.
The law is named in memory of three-year-old Jaya Brooks, who tragically lost her life in a wrong-way crash on U.S. Highway 95 in Las Vegas in December 2023. Her family’s unwavering advocacy played a pivotal role in the bill’s passage, highlighting the profound impact of citizen involvement in shaping public policy.
Assemblyman Brian Hibbetts, R-Las Vegas, sponsored the bill, emphasizing the need for stricter penalties to prevent such avoidable tragedies. “I hope it’ll get people talking about the issue, and also thinking more when they’re driving,” Hibbetts stated, urging drivers to remain vigilant and focused behind the wheel.
The unanimous support for “Jaya’s Law” in both legislative chambers reflects a bipartisan commitment to public safety and accountability. By enforcing more stringent consequences for reckless actions, Nevada reinforces the principle that freedom comes with responsibility—a cornerstone of conservative values.
