High Stakes and High Demand: Will Las Vegas Finally Allow Cannabis Near Casinos?

By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, February 18, 2025 11:38 am

Las Vegas, a city known for pushing boundaries, remains curiously hesitant when it comes to legal cannabis access on the Strip. Despite Nevada’s legalization of recreational marijuana, strict federal regulations keep casinos from getting involved—forcing tourists to turn to illicit markets instead of regulated dispensaries. But could that soon change?

Assemblymember Max Carter II is preparing to introduce a bill aimed at bridging the gap between the city’s booming tourism industry and the state’s struggling legal cannabis market. Instead of allowing full-scale cannabis sales on the Strip, the bill proposes a kiosk pickup system at casinos and hotels, where visitors could legally receive cannabis deliveries from state-approved dispensaries.

Right now, dispensaries can’t legally deliver to casino properties due to gaming regulations, leaving a massive opportunity for the black market to thrive. By implementing a controlled delivery system, Carter hopes to curb illegal sales and bring revenue back into the regulated industry. With over 100,000 visitors flocking to Las Vegas daily, the economic potential of integrating cannabis sales is enormous.

But will Nevada’s powerful gaming industry get on board? Casinos operate under strict federal scrutiny, and the industry has long resisted any connection to cannabis out of fear of losing gaming licenses. However, as regulated cannabis sales continue to drop while illicit operations boom, some casino leaders may see this as a compromise worth considering.

Carter’s bill doesn’t promise to overhaul cannabis access overnight, but it could be a major first step toward bringing legal weed closer to where the tourists actually are. Is it time for Las Vegas to embrace cannabis as part of its entertainment empire, or will the Strip remain off-limits?

What do you think? Should Vegas casinos allow cannabis deliveries, or should the industry remain separate?
