Authorities in Nevada are investigating the discovery of hundreds of cremated human remains that were dumped in a remote area of the desert south of Las Vegas. According to law enforcement, the ashes were found earlier this month near the town of Searchlight, roughly an hour from the city.
Investigators believe the material is human cremains that may have been discarded illegally. The Clark County coroner’s office, local sheriff’s deputies, and federal land managers are coordinating to determine the origin of the remains and whether any laws were violated.
Officials have not confirmed how long the ashes had been there or who may be responsible, but early evidence suggests the material could be connected to a defunct funeral home or crematorium. Testing and forensic review are underway to identify any recoverable information about the individuals.
Law enforcement has asked anyone with information to contact authorities as the investigation continues.
