Inflight Pen-Stabbing Suspect Pleads Guilty to Felony Assault on Seattle-to-Vegas Flight

LAS VEGAS, NV — A passenger whose violent, mid-air meltdown triggered a terrifying emergency landing at Harry Reid International Airport officially entered a federal guilty plea on Tuesday.
The development marks a rapid conclusion to one of the valley’s most disturbing recent cases of severe inflight violence.
The Homemade Pen Weapon
According to the official plea agreement unsealed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada, Julio Alvarez Lopez pleaded guilty to one count of felony assault with a dangerous weapon. The charge stems from a chaotic January 24, 2024 incident aboard an Alaska Airlines flight en route from Seattle, Washington, to Las Vegas, Nevada.
Federal prosecutors detailed that mid-flight, Lopez suddenly launched an unprovoked, highly aggressive physical assault on a nearby passenger. Lopez systematically punched and hit the victim before pulling out a crude, homemade stabbing weapon consisting of three ink pens bound tightly together with hair bands. He repeatedly stabbed the victim around the upper body and eye area, causing severe lacerations that later required surgical stitches. After a tense struggle, passengers and flight crew successfully tackled and restrained Lopez for the remainder of the flight.
Admissions of Intent to FBI
Upon landing at Harry Reid International Airport, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers boarded the aircraft and took Lopez into administrative custody.

During a subsequent interrogation where he waived his Miranda rights, Lopez made a series of statements to FBI special agents and Federal Air Marshals. He confessed that he had intentionally constructed the pen weapon before boarding the plane and targeted the specific victim because he believed the individual was looking at him in a “harassing way.” Lopez explicitly admitted that he was actively attempting to murder the passenger by shoving the bound pens directly through the eye socket into the victim’s brain.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Sigal Chattah confirmed that Lopez will remain in federal detention without bail. A federal district court judge has locked in his formal sentencing hearing for September 22, 2026, where he faces a substantial multi-year prison sentence under federal guidelines.
