Las Vegas Considers Easement Waiver for Lone Mountain Temple

Las Vegas, NV – The Las Vegas Planning Commission is set to meet on Tuesday to discuss the potential vacation of easements for a proposed Latter-day Saint temple in the Lone Mountain area.
The city’s Public Works Department has expressed no objections to relinquishing the easements, which are typically required for road, drainage, and sewer access. However, the proposed temple, located near Grand Canyon Drive and Hickam Avenue, does not necessitate these infrastructure elements.
The Las Vegas City Council unanimously approved the temple project over the summer. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints intends to build the temple to accommodate the growing number of members in Southern Nevada.
While the project has received city approval, it has faced opposition from some local residents who argue that the temple is incompatible with the area’s rural-residential zoning and could lead to increased traffic, air pollution, and light pollution.
A lawsuit was filed in August alleging that the city of Las Vegas violated a zoning agreement with Clark County by approving the temple project. The next hearing for the lawsuit is scheduled for February 6, 2025.
