What was intended to be a weekend of elite competition and camaraderie ended in tragedy for the law enforcement community. Levi Vargas, a 30-year-old deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, died Saturday after suffering a medical emergency during the Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay.
Vargas was participating in the grueling 120-mile race, which stretches across the desert and concludes on the Las Vegas Strip. He reportedly collapsed during his leg of the relay as temperatures hit record highs in the Mojave. Despite immediate life-saving efforts from off-duty medical staff and transport to a local hospital, Vargas passed away. The LASD remembered him Sunday for his “professionalism and compassion.” The “B2V” relay is a massive annual event drawing thousands of officers from across the globe, and this year’s finish was marked by a somber cloud of mourning.
