Local Business Owner Champions E-Bike Safety Amidst Collision Surge
By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, April 8, 2025 8:44 am
In response to the alarming surge in e-bike and e-scooter accidents across the Las Vegas valley, Joe Cantalicio, owner of WheelZen Rides, is taking proactive steps to enhance rider safety. Recognizing the critical need for education amidst this rising trend, Cantalicio has initiated “Time and Place,” a complimentary program aimed at equipping riders with essential safety knowledge.
The popularity of electric bikes and scooters has skyrocketed, offering convenient transportation alternatives. However, this convenience comes with increased risks. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reports a staggering 200% increase in fatal collisions involving these vehicles compared to the same period last year.
Cantalicio emphasizes the importance of appropriate safety gear, noting that traditional bicycle helmets are insufficient for e-bike and e-scooter riders. He advocates for specialized helmets designed to withstand higher impact forces associated with motorized rides. Additionally, he highlights the necessity of regular equipment maintenance, including chain adjustments and tire pressure checks, to prevent mechanical failures that could lead to accidents.
The “Time and Place” program is scheduled to commence on Saturday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at WheelZen Rides, located at 3863 Valley View Boulevard Suite #1. The sessions are free and open to the public, with prior RSVP recommended via phone at 702-992-3750.
As the community grapples with the implications of integrating these modern modes of transport, initiatives like “Time and Place” underscore the importance of personal responsibility and proactive safety measures. The question remains: Are riders ready to prioritize safety in the face of convenience?
