Multi-State Equine Virus Threat Looms Over Las Vegas Rodeo Events

The National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in Las Vegas is proceeding under heightened scrutiny due to an ongoing multi-state outbreak of an equine virus, specifically Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1). The highly contagious virus, which can cause respiratory symptoms or, in its more severe neurological form (EHM), paralysis and death, has infected at least 60 horses across several states. Despite the widespread cases, the Equine Disease Communication Center confirms that no cases have been reported in Nevada as of this time.
In response to the threat, organizers of the NFR and related events, working closely with the Nevada Department of Agriculture, have implemented stringent biosecurity measures. These precautions include requiring a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection within seven days of arrival, obtaining an entry permit for every horse entering the state, and daily temperature checks for all competing horses. Horses stabled at the main NFR venue are also restricted from traveling to other concurrent events. Furthermore, walls have been erected between stalls to prevent nose-to-nose contact, and sanitization protocols have been significantly increased. The concern over the virus has already led to the cancellation or relocation of several surrounding events, including the National Finals Breakaway Roping, which was moved to Fort Worth, Texas. The industry remains highly vigilant, with the understanding that a single confirmed case within the NFR could potentially halt the entire event.
