NDOT Design Flaw? Petition Gains Momentum After Fatal Motorcycle Plunge

A grieving local family is turning their tragedy into a crusade for highway safety, demanding that the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) overhaul its design standards for valley overpasses. The movement follows the horrific death of 53-year-old Deon Baber, who was killed on March 14 when his motorcycle struck a concrete barrier on the Desert Inn Road overpass, ejecting him 30 feet onto the northbound lanes of I-15.
The victim’s family, led by Brittany Gallant, has launched a formal petition calling for the installation of higher, crash-rated safety barriers and “anti-climb” fencing on all major elevated interchanges. Currently, federal and state standards allow for concrete barriers as low as 32 to 42 inches. Advocates argue these heights are dangerously insufficient for motorcyclists, whose center of gravity often sits above the rail during a collision.
“We are tired of seeing ‘standard’ designs fail our residents,” a family spokesperson stated. “Aesthetics and cost should never outweigh the lives of those on our roads.” While NDOT officials have noted that the Desert Inn overpass met all federal guidelines at the time of its construction, the department is reportedly reviewing the final crash reports to determine if “engineering enhancements” are feasible for high-risk flyover ramps. The petition has already garnered thousands of signatures, signaling a growing public demand for a “Safety First” approach to Las Vegas infrastructure.
