Nevada’s Cannabis Lounge Experiment Hits a Snag: Smoke and Mirrors Closes Amid Regulatory Challenges
By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, April 20, 2025 1:01 pm
Nevada’s ambitious venture into cannabis consumption lounges has encountered a significant hurdle with the closure of its first state-licensed lounge, Smoke and Mirrors, operated by Thrive Cannabis Marketplace. Opened in February 2024, the lounge ceased operations on April 4, 2025, citing an unsustainable regulatory framework that hampers profitability .
Thrive’s managing partner, Mitch Britten, highlighted the challenges posed by the current regulations, stating that the compliance costs and product limitations make the lounge model economically unviable . The closure leaves Dazed!, located inside Planet 13’s dispensary, as the only state-sanctioned consumption lounge currently operating in Nevada.
The state’s Cannabis Compliance Board has issued conditional approvals for 21 additional lounges, but none have commenced operations. Prospective operators face hurdles such as securing $200,000 in operational liquidity and navigating complex regulatory requirements .
The closure of Smoke and Mirrors underscores the need for regulatory reforms to support the viability of cannabis lounges in Nevada. Without adjustments, the state’s vision for a thriving cannabis hospitality sector may remain unrealized.
