Newton Elementary School in Henderson Cancels Classes Due to Teacher Shortages

LAS VEGAS – Newton Elementary School in Henderson has cancelled classes for Wednesday, joining the growing list of Las Vegas Valley schools affected by teacher absences. The ongoing issue has escalated into a legal battle between the school district and the teachers’ union.

Principal Meaghan McGowan conveyed in a message to families that the school faced “an unexpected number of licensed staff/teachers absent from school today.” As a result, parents are requested not to bring their children to campus.

To support affected families, the Clark County School District has announced that Henderson’s Battle Born Kids childcare program will be available at Black Mountain Recreation Center.

Newton Elementary School is the latest public school in Clark County to cancel classes due to teacher absences. This decision comes on the heels of four other schools in the Las Vegas Valley also having to cancel classes on Tuesday.

The Clark County School District has accused the Clark County Education Association (CCEA) of orchestrating these “sickouts” during contract negotiations. CCEA, however, has denied any involvement in the teacher absences.

A judge is scheduled to hear the Clark County School District’s argument for a restraining order later Wednesday morning to prevent further teacher absences.
