A North Las Vegas police officer and 25-year-old Alexander Andre Mathis were both killed in a shootout Tuesday afternoon following a tense confrontation near Camino Al Norte and Lone Mountain Road. The incident unfolded around 2:13 p.m. when officers responded to reports of Mathis allegedly pointing a gun at another individual.

Upon arrival, officers attempted to engage with Mathis, who ignored commands and fled. When an officer located him shortly after, Mathis was armed and continued to disregard repeated orders to show his hands. The situation escalated quickly, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.

The officer was struck multiple times but managed to return fire, hitting Mathis. Fellow officers administered immediate medical aid until North Las Vegas Fire Department personnel arrived. Despite efforts to save him, the officer succumbed to his injuries at UMC Trauma Center. Mathis was also transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of one of North Las Vegas’ finest,” said Chief of Police Jacqueline Gravatt. “Police officers choose this line of work because they want to protect and serve the community, knowing the risks and challenges that come with the badge. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the officer’s family, friends, and his brotherhood in blue.”

This incident marks the first officer-involved shooting for the North Las Vegas Police Department in 2025.
