Northern Nevada Fire Crews Secure 58% Containment on 93,000-Acre Bug Fire as Stallion Fire Reaches 74%

RENO, NV — Multi-agency wildland fire crews made critical strides toward suppressing two of the state’s largest active blazes on Saturday, pushing containment on the Bug Fire to 58% and the Stallion Fire to 74% across Washoe County.

First igniting along U.S. Highway 395 before merging with the Fred Mountain Fire, the Bug Fire burned approximately 93,367 acres of dry sagebrush and high-desert timber along the California-Nevada state line.

Perimeter Fortification and Air Ops

Supported by aerial water drops from Nevada Army National Guard helicopters and regional air tankers, ground crews from the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, Cal Fire, and the Nevada Division of Forestry constructed defensible lines along Winnemucca Ranch Road and the Dogskin Mountains.

On the separate 40,689-acre Stallion Fire near Pyramid Lake, improved line security allowed strike teams to mop up hot spots along State Routes 445 and 446.

“Favorable morning humidity and coordinated air-ground attacks allowed crews to secure vital perimeter anchors,” regional fire commanders reported. “Our primary focus remains extinguishing interior flare-ups and securing structures.”

Evacuation and Shelter Status

While several evacuation zones have been downgraded, Level 3 “Go” orders and Level 2 “Set” warnings remain in place for portions of Washoe County and Lassen County’s Zone LAS-671-B.

Human Shelters: Operational at the Evelyn Mount Community Center (1301 Valley Rd, Reno) and the Reno Gym (34 Reservation Rd).
