LAS VEGAS – On Wednesday, Caesars Palace’s last year-one employee retired.
Benny Figgins reportedly celebrated 55 years at the resort.
Figgins was hired on April 27, 1967, and worked in five areas. According to Caesars, Figgins started at the site as a casino porter. Figgins worked as a convention porter, setting up events. Caesars says Figgins afterward worked as a dishwasher at Bacchanal and a busboy at Circus Maximus.
Figgins has been a blackjack dealer at the original Palace Casino dome since 1971.
Caesars Entertainment said Figgins’ retirement was “fit for a Caesar.”
Caesars Palace staff members and Caesars Entertainment leadership greeted Figgins at the end of his final shift, the business said. He was then driven home in a limo.
Caesars Entertainment sent Figgins a plaque and crystals from the original Caesars Palace chandelier for his retirement. As part of a multimillion-dollar restoration of the resort’s main entryway, Figgins’ gaming area received a new chandelier, columns, and carpeting.
Figgins is one of five year-one employees still at Caesars Palace, according to a June 2016 post. The group earned a 50th-anniversary pin.
Figgins’ most memorable moments include meeting Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Diana Ross, Henry Belafonte, and Joe Louis, according to the firm.
Figgins met his wife there in the 1970s. Figgins’ wife worked as a PDX operator and table games dealer for 38 years, the firm said. Caesars stated they’re married with three daughters.
Figgins will miss Caesars Palace, his home away from home, the firm stated.
